 Prostate — Recruiting

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Australia and New Zealand. Some people are diagnosed with intermediate-risk prostate cancer; cancer that has not spread beyond the prostate but may have a moderate chance of growing or spreading over time. For these people, active surveillance is a common management option. Active surveillance means regularly monitoring the cancer rather than treating it straight away, and helps people avoid or delay the side effects of surgery or radiation therapy. However, it can be difficult to know who can continue on active surveillance and who may need treatment sooner. Without better tools to guide this decision, some people may end up being treated for a cancer that would never have caused harm, while others may not receive treatment when they need it. Genomic testing looks at the genetic make-up of a person's cancer and their inherited DNA to better understand how likely the cancer is to grow or spread. These tests exist but are not currently part of routine prostate cancer care in Australia. The GenI-AIRSPACE clinical trial is testing whether giving people and their doctors the results of genomic tests helps them make better decisions about treatment, and whether this leads to better outcomes in the long run for people with intermediate-risk prostate cancer on active surveillance. Where genomic results are provided, they are shared with the participant and their doctor to help guide decision-making together. The study does not tell participants what treatment to have.

If you think this trial might be right for you, please ask your doctor.
